One year of Penance
Happy birthday, Damned One!
One year ago I had an idea: What if Quake, but endless levels? Well, Penance was then eventually born and released exactly a year ago.
I didn't expect much players honestly, just few downloads and people saying it's alright. But the response was so big, I ended up updating the game with a proper campaign, which led to more and more people downloading the game!
I'm still baffled by the astonishing response this game has gotten and I'm grateful to everyone who has spent time playing Penance. I'm also especially grateful to my fans (that still feels so weird to say!!) that are following me now for more games. I never expected this little game gather such a following.
Here's some stats!
- 5987 total downloads, at the moment of writing this! THAT'S A LOT!! I've never had that many downloads in any game.
- +22k views, which is just.. Wow.
- There is at least one download every day, since the launch.
- Total 33 ratings, with average score of 4 stars. I read all the ratings by the way, thank you for them!
- 1145 collections in total.
So, what's the future of Penance?
I'd love to make a sequel with more levels and better graphics! However, I have bunch of other game ideas to work on, like Loputon which is my current ARPG project and after that I'll be making a third-person-shooter.
If I ever manage to get myself that gamedev studio I've been dreaming about for years, I'd love to make Ironscale proper. But maybe after that there could be more Penance.
Sorry there's no definite answer, I'm bit wary giving anything definitive. 2020 has been such a rollercoaster and who knows what next years will be like, so I don't want to promise anything I can't keep. But Ironscale is something I'd love to make as my next FPS.
Would I like to update Penance?
Absolutely! I'd love to drop more updates. Never say never, but now my gamedev time is going to my new ARPG project. I also have a programming job so I'm bit taxed to capacity during workdays, so I honestly just don't feel like working on any game after a workday, usually. But I try to work on my games on weekends. Anyway, please don't hold your breath waiting for Penance updates. It's something I'd love to do, but I just don't have the time or energy. I'm very sorry about that. If gamedev was my main job, Penance would get updates straight away.
Last but not least, Penance is being reviewed in E1M1 magazine! Seeing my game in a magazine is something I dreamed of as a kid. That dream has come true now and it's still mindboggling to me! https://twitter.com/E1M1magazine/status/1327639367905652738?s=20
Thank you all for being on this ride with me and Damned One. I hope Penance keeps you entertained for days to come whenever you feel like hopping around like a madman and gibbing demons!
For my future game updates, follow my twitter: https://twitter.com/akselmo I tend to shitpost a lot but I tag my gamedev stuff with #gamedev lol.
Your support for my little silly games has kept my 2020 more tolerable.
